I eventually decided it meant "if you want to get excited about something, you have to you write it down."

I lifted the title out of "Puritan Boston and Quaker Philadelphia: Two Protestant Ethics and the Spirit of Class Authority and Leadership" by the amusingly named E. Digby Baltzell. So I guess that's a hint.
