We are thinking of planning a trip to Costa Rica. Part of the trip is to get from Tabacon to Monteverde, which I gather is a very popular tourist route, being between two of the most scenic parts of the country.
We are trying to gather information about that drive. Is it realistically 3 hours? Or is it more like 6 hours?
Part of my research uses Google maps, right? Have you seen the Google maps 3D driving simulation thing? It’s amazing!
Follow this link to the Google Mapspage, and then locate the 3D button in the white margin on the left next to the directions. Click the button and BE AMAZED!!
Another crazy-brilliant site, OpenStreetMap.org, is aiming to get all of us to annotate maps of all places on the planet. In other words, I know my neighborhood, let me log in and indicate what streets are called what, which ones are one way, where the intersections are etc. This may not sound so special if you live in Boston, or any other relatively built up part of the world. But for out of the way places where, one might presume, the bigco’s have not yet come through to annotate the sattelite photos, it sets up a rather cool, people powered way of capturing this inform...
There’s an amusing site called Google Sightseeing whose sole purpose is to point out cool/curious/amusing features that people can pick out from the (amazingly cool) satellite images provided by Google Maps. Inspired by the pictures in today’s feed I remembered that Target stores have a cute image on the roofs of their stores, so I went looking and found this one right in my own neighborhood!
I am a huge fan of Wikipedia. Here’s a new neat hack: Wikipedia Vision. This is a live, animated, world map, showing in real time each edit to the Wikipedia, as it happens. Makes the world feel even smaller, doesn’t it? It’s a cool way to learn about topics in Wikipedia that you may not have known about.

I wrote about this a little while back, but now it’s even easier! Do you want to embed a map of something or other on your site or your blog? Take a look at this site, fmatlas.com. It makes it sooooo easy! For exampe, here’s a map that I added here, in about 30 seconds, of my favorite lake:

I came across this interesting bit in LifeHacker: WikiMapia – The geographical wikipedia – Lifehacker. It teaches that using WikiMapia, you can add a map to any web page in 30 seconds. If that claim is true, then you should be seeing a map of where I was born below. If you don’t see that map, then ignore this post, please 🙂

p.s. It worked!!!Just shows that there’s nothing you can’t get from the internet, and that Google Maps is unbelievably cool!

Google is now officially unstoppable! Check out how they’ve now integrated satellite images into Google Maps. Now we know what they wanted with the Keyhole acquisition. What a wonderful integration. Click on the image to see it full size! The address, by the way, is of the Harvard University Berkman Center.
Unless you have been living under a rock (or have better things to do with your time) you will have seen Google Maps. Well, I only just tonight looked at them for the first time. Stunning! A spectacular web application. Highly usable and useful. And easy on the eyes!
